Indian Railways: Workshop Projects Organization (WPO)
Workshop Projects Organization (WPO)
About WPO:
The Workshop Projects Organization (WPO) was established in October, 2002. The task was to set up a modern coach Periodic Overhaul (POH) workshop at Harnaut in Bihar. The headquarter was at Tilak Bridge, New Delhi. For time bound execution, closer monitoring by higher echelons and reduced transaction time the organization functioned directly under the Railway Board. This was in line with practices during setting up the Wheel & Axle Plant (WAP), Diesel Component Works (DCW) and Rail Coach Factory (RCF). However, in December 2003, the Headquarter was shifted to Patna and the unit was placed under GM/ECR.
The Rail Wheel Plant (RWP), Bela and the Wagon POH Workshop (WRWP), Sonpur were added to WPO’s basket of projects in 2004-05 and 2006-07 respectively.
The Diesel Loco Factory Project (DLFP), Marhaura was sanctioned in the Supplementary Budget of 2006-07 and transferred from NER to WPO on 31st January 2007.
Status quo ante was restored in the command and control chain when WPO was once again, placed directly under the Railway Board with effect from 20th March, 2007.
In the year 2007, Railway Board announced incentives to motivate serving IR personnel to join WPO. These included 3 advance increments and one additional pass for 5 years for personnel below officers rank. For officers, the incentives declared were tenure of 3 years followed by posting of choice, retention of quarters at last station and preference in foreign training.
The Diesel Loco Factory Project (DLFP), Marhaura has been placed under GM/ ECR and a separate CAO has been deployed with effect from July 2007.
The work for construction of Coach Midlife Rehabilitation Workshop at Anara, Disst. Purulia (W.B.)(under Adra division)/SER (250 coaches per annum) which was assigned to this organisation on 12 Oct 2010, is transferred to RVNL in the month of April-2012.
